Posted on August 15, 2026 by Toyin Olaitan

Nollywood has a busy month ahead, with new comedies, thrillers, historical dramas and culturally rooted stories arriving in Nigerian cinemas throughout August 2026.

From Sweet 16, which opened nationwide on August 14, to major upcoming releases including Ikenga: The Last Festival, ÀBÙJÁA, The Night of June 7th and King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos, there is plenty for Nigerian movie lovers to look forward to.

Here are some of the biggest Nollywood movies to watch this month.

1. Sweet 16

Release date: August 14, 2026

Sweet 16 is one of the month’s major Nigerian cinema releases. Written and directed by Willis Ikedum, the comedy-drama follows a privileged 16-year-old whose elaborate birthday expectations take an unexpected turn after she discovers unsettling secrets about her family’s true circumstances.

The movie features Yemi Alade, Mercy Aigbe, Uche Jombo, Broda Shaggi, Denrele Edun, Angel Unigwe, Kalu Ikeagwu and the late Alexx Ekubo. Yemi Alade’s appearance adds another music-to-film crossover to the project.

2. Ikenga: The Last Festival

Release date: August 21, 2026

One of the most anticipated indigenous Nigerian films this month is Ikenga: The Last Festival.

The film brings together major Nollywood names including Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Patience Ozokwo, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Zubby Michael, Regina Daniels and Destiny Etiko.

Directed by Darlington Kelechi, the story explores tradition, power and honour within a community governed by long-standing customs. FilmOne is handling the nationwide cinema distribution.

3. ÀBÙJÁA

Release date: August 21, 2026

ÀBÙJÁA is another major Nigerian epic arriving in cinemas this month.

The film explores power, destiny, leadership and sacrifice, with the tagline:

“Every throne demands a sacrifice.”

Produced by Medinat Jimoh and Tina Mba, the film is scheduled for a nationwide cinema premiere on August 21 and will be distributed by Nile Entertainment.

4. The Night of June 7th

Release date: August 28, 2026

The Night of June 7th is another upcoming Nigerian title on the August cinema calendar.

The film is currently listed among the month’s upcoming Nollywood releases, alongside Kosoko, Abujaa and Ikenga: The Last Festival.

Its late-August release makes it one to keep on the radar as Nigerian cinemas move toward the final weekend of the month.

5. King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos

Release date: August 28, 2026

One of the month’s biggest historical productions is King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos.

Directed by Adebayo Tijani, the film is set in 19th-century Lagos and dramatises the rise, reign and resistance of Oba Kosoko during a period marked by political rivalry and foreign pressure.

The film features major Nollywood names including Odunlade Adekola, Femi Adebayo and Gabriel Afolayan and is scheduled to arrive in Nigerian cinemas on August 28.

Why August Is Important for Nollywood

August is shaping up to be an interesting month for Nigerian cinema because filmmakers are offering audiences very different types of stories.

There are family-friendly productions such as Sweet 16, culturally rooted films such as Ikenga: The Last Festival and ÀBÙJÁA, and historical productions such as King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos.

The variety also reflects the continuing expansion of Nollywood’s theatrical market, with filmmakers increasingly investing in stories that combine Nigerian history, culture, entertainment and contemporary themes.

Which Nollywood Movies Should You Watch?

If you’re looking for a family comedy, Sweet 16 is one of the month’s notable choices.

For viewers interested in tradition and cultural storytelling, Ikenga: The Last Festival and ÀBÙJÁA are particularly worth watching.

Meanwhile, fans of historical Nigerian stories should keep an eye on King Kosoko: The Battle for Lagos.
