Osun Election 2026: Voters Head to Polls as Osun Decides Its Next Governor Today

Posted on August 15, 2026 by Toyin Olaitan

The election is taking place across the state’s 30 local government areas, with millions of registered voters expected to participate in the poll. Reports from polling locations indicate that INEC officials, election materials and early voters are already arriving at several polling units.

Osun Goes to the Polls

The 2026 Osun governorship election was originally scheduled for August 8 but was moved to Saturday, August 15 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The election has attracted significant attention because of the political competition surrounding the race and its importance ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

More than 2.3 million people are registered to vote in Osun State. INEC reported that 1,906,390 Permanent Voter Cards had been collected, representing about 81.5% of registered voters ahead of the election.

Who Are Osun Voters Choosing?

The election features candidates from several political parties, with the major contenders attracting particular attention across the state.

Among the prominent names in the race are:

  • Ademola Adeleke
  • Bola Oyebamiji
  • Najeem Salaam
  • Other candidates representing different political parties

The contest has generated considerable interest as voters weigh issues including infrastructure, jobs, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare, security and economic development.

Why Today’s Election Matters

The Osun election is more than a contest for the governor’s seat.

The result could provide an important indication of political strength ahead of the 2027 general elections, making the outcome significant beyond Osun State itself.

President Bola Tinubu has called on INEC and security agencies to ensure that the election is peaceful, transparent and credible, with the outcome reflecting the will of voters.

Security and Election Day Expectations

Security agencies have also issued warnings against electoral manipulation and other violations.

Police authorities in Osun have warned political actors and other participants against attempting to manipulate the election and said those who violate electoral laws could face arrest.

For voters, the focus today is on participating peacefully and allowing the electoral process to take its course.
